چکیده

It is shown that low-collisionality plasmas cannot support linearly polarized shear-Alfvén fluctuations above a critical amplitude d b ~ ^ B B0 1 2, where β is the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure. Above this cutoff, a developing fluctuation will generate a pressure anisotropy that is sufficient to destabilize itself through the parallel firehose instability. This causes the wave frequency to approach zero, interrupting the fluctuation before any oscillation. The magnetic field lines rapidly relax into a sequence of angular zig-zag structures. Such a restrictive bound on shear-Alfvén-wave amplitudes has far-reaching implications for the physics of magnetized turbulence in the high-β conditions prevalent in many astrophysical plasmas, as well as for the solar wind at ∼1au where β1.

Amplitude limits and nonlinear damping of shear-Alfvén waves in high-beta low-collisionality plasmas

This work, which extends Squire et al. [ApJL, 830 L25 (2016)], explores the effect of self-generated pressure anisotropy on linearly polarized shear-Alfvén fluctuations in low-collisionality plasmas. Such anisotropies lead to stringent limits on the amplitude of magnetic perturbations in high-β plasmas, above which a fluctuation can destabilize itself through the parallel firehose instability. ...

Pedestal Structure Without And With 3D Fields

Achieving high pedestal pressures in H(high)-mode plasmas confined in tokamaks is critical for obtaining fusion burning plasmas in ITER. Recent characterizations of quasi-equilibrium plasma parameter profiles in low collisionality H-mode pedestals in the DIII-D tokamak are briefly summarized. Critical plasma transport properties (large radial electron heat flow, density pinch) that establish th...

Resistive Wall Mode Stabilization and Plasma Rotation Damping Considerations for Maintaining High Beta Plasma Discharges in NSTX

Maintaining steady fusion power output at high plasma beta is an important goal for future burning plasmas such as in ITER advanced scenario operation and a fusion nuclear science facility. Research on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) is investigating stability and control physics to maintain steady high plasma normalized beta with minimal fluctuation. Resistive wall mode (RWM) in...

Magnetic-flutter-induced pedestal plasma transport

Plasma toroidal rotation can limit reconnection of externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) fields δB on rational magnetic flux surfaces. Hence it causes the induced radial perturbations δBρ to be small there, thereby inhibiting magnetic island formation and stochasticity at the top of pedestals in high (H-mode) confinement tokamak plasmas. However, the δBρs induced by RMPs incre...

Particle Heating by Nonlinear Alfvénic Turbulence in Adafs

Particle heating in advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) by nonlinear MHD (Alfvénic) turbulence is investigated. Such turbulence with highly-fluctuating magnetic fields, B̃ ∼ B0, is believed to be naturally produced by the magnetic shearing instability near the nonlinear saturation. It is shown that the energy is dissipated in the parallel cascade, which occurs due to nonlinear compressib...
